High Pressure Optical Test Rig (HiPOT)

In the High Pressure Optical Test Rig (HiPOT), burners can be operated under typical gas turbine conditions and combustion phenomena can be analysed in detail, i.e. at high pressure, high turbulence and high temperatures and with all fuel mixtures up to pure hydrogen, just like in the Stuttgart high-pressure combustion chamber test rig (HBK-S).

However, the geometric dimensions of this test rig are much more compact than those of the HBK-S, which is why generic burners or appropriately scaled burners are generally used for the investigations.

The handy size of the test stand has the great advantage that the measurements are significantly less complex and therefore more cost-effective. The combination of size, fuel flexibility and range of applications is a unique selling point of the HiPOT.

Thanks to the excellent optical access, combustion phenomena can be analysed in great detail not only with conventional measurement methods, but also with modern laser measurement technology. As a result, an improved understanding of sub-aspects of technical combustion is being worked on and validation data sets are being generated to support the development of numerical combustion simulation.
