The European Data Relay System (EDRS)

The European Data Relay System (EDRS) will be a network of geostationary satellites. The system will allow large quantities of data to be transmitted from Earth observation satellites in low orbits to the ground in real time. The primary advantage will be that these satellites will not – as has previously been the case – be restricted to short periods of line-of-sight contact during their flight over ground stations.
