For the fourth time in a row, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has reported on its commitment to greater sustainability within the framework of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact. Our latest declaration under the German Sustainability Code (DNK) underscores our goal of adhering to the principles of the internationally recognised UN pact. Sustainable and responsible action is an integral part of our work. The sustainability reporting system established at DLR a decade ago forms an essential foundation of this commitment.
The ten principles of the UN Global Compact
The Global Compact – the world's largest initiative for responsible and sustainable corporate governance – was launched by the United Nations in 2000. Today, this pact includes more than 20,000 participants from over 160 countries – companies, non-business organisations, research institutions and civil society actors. Its aim is to create a global movement for a sustainable, responsible and future-proof world economy.
The UN Global Compact is based on internationally recognised values across human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and anti-corruption. Participating organisations commit to supporting and implementing the following principles:
1. Support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights
2. Avoid complicity in human rights violations
3. Uphold freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
4. Eliminate all forms of forced and compulsory labour
5. Abolish child labour
6. Eliminate discrimination in employment and occupation
7. Support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges
8. Promote greater environmental responsibility
9. Support the development and dissemination of environmentally compatible technologies
10. Combat all forms of corruption, including extortion and bribery
The ten principles of the Global Compact form a binding foundation for DLR's strategy, corporate culture and daily practices. They have therefore been enshrined in our Code of Conduct and compliance regulations. The goal is to continue this commitment long-term and to permanently embed these principles in our work.
DLR's commitment at a glance
DLR joined the UN Global Compact in 2020. In reaching this important milestone, we committed ourselves to embedding sustainability and social responsibility even more consistently across all areas of our research and administration.
As a non-business organisation, DLR is obliged to regularly report on progress in implementing the ten principles of the Global Compact. Every two years, we publish a Communication on Engagement (CoE), which provides our stakeholders with clear and verifiable insights into our actions and results.
