In 2017, DLR founded the Institute of Data Science in the city of Jena to turn 'big data' – complex and unstructured datasets – into 'smart data', from which conclusions can be drawn and recommendations for action developed.
At the Jena site, the DLR Institute of Data Science develops methods that enable knowledge generation from data, drive data-driven innovation and facilitate informed decision-making.
The Institute of Data Science aims to create a 'data backbone' by considering the entire data life cycle – from data sources and processing through to machine learning and practical recommendations for action. In doing so, the institute supports innovative and efficient data usage in science and society and contributes to sustainable processes and robust, future-proof technologies across all DLR application areas.
At the DLR_School_Lab Jena, school children can conduct their own experiments on current DLR research topics and explore STEM subjects, particularly those related to the work of the DLR Institute of Data Science in Jena.
