Gerhard Thiele was selected to Germany's astronaut team in 1987. He has belonged to ESA's European Astronaut Corps since 1998. Thiele flew as a mission specialist between 11 and 22 February 2000, on the Space Shuttle mission STS-99. This mission, also known as the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), gathered data for the first three-dimensional digital atlas of Earth's surface.
