Colour-coded perspective view showing the topography of the upper course of Ares Vallis
With large-scale mosaics and the derived digital terrain models, the sometimes extreme topographical differences on Mars can be represented graphically. This colour-coded perspective image shows a view from the south in the 50-kilometre-wide upper reaches of Ares Vallis, a large outflow channel in the central highlands of Mars, which extends about 1700 kilometres north to its mouth in the lowlands. The red-coloured highlands around Margaritifer Terra are about 4000 metres above the lowest points, which are shown in blue.
