After visiting the asteroid Vesta, Dawn travelled for one-and-a-half years – propelled by an ion engine – to reach the dwarf planet Ceres at the beginning of 2015. Dawn will observe the 1000-kilometre-diameter ‘almost planet’ until the beginning of 2016 from orbits at various altitudes.
