Topographic overview map of the Aonia Terra region on Mars
This overview map shows a section of the Aonia Terra region on Mars, located in the southern highlands not far from the polar circle. It is also home to several impact craters with expansive dune fields. The images described in the article are located within the smaller rectangle inside the image strip taken by the HRSC camera on board Mars Express during orbit 16,934 on 16 May 2017. Depressions like impact craters can become ‘sediment traps’ if the wind blows material into them, which then accumulates as deposits at the base. The image colour coding accentuates the elevation differences on the surface – darker ochre shades indicate a region with higher elevation.
