The HRSC camera system on ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, operated by DLR, photographed the strip of images during orbit 18,904. The landscape of the images shown in this publication is located in the smaller rectangle. Terra Cimmeria – the ‘Land of the Cimmerians’, a people who lived on the northern shore of the Black Sea and in the Caucasus in ancient times – is located east of Hellas Planitia, the largest impact basin on Mars. It is one of the oldest areas in the Mars highlands, which has been shaped by a variety of geological processes throughout its history. To the north, Terra Cimmeria is bordered by the Elysium Planum lowlands, where the landing sites of the Mars rovers Spirit and Curiosity and the InSight geophysical station are located.
