On 11 February 2020, the Sentinel-2 satellite was able to observe the break-up of the Pine Island glacier from space. The Copernicus satellites determine, among other things, the thickness of ice layers on land and sea surfaces and thus provide important information on climate change. They also supply data for maritime applications.
