ISS commander William McMichael Shepherd and cosmonauts Yuri Pavlovich Gidzenko and Sergei Konstantinovich Krikalev were the first people to enter the International Space Station (ISS), on 2 November 2000. They turned on its life support systems, bringing the ISS to life.
