The dawn of a new era
Soyuz spacecraft TM-31 lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on the Kazakh steppe at 10:53 local time on 31 October 2000. It launched from the legendary Site 1, which is also referred to as Gagarin’s launch site – Yuri Gagarin departed from here on 12 April 1961, becoming the first person to travel into space.
