The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) uses SHERP vehicles for the 'last mile' - the critical last five to 50 kilometres to a destination, which are extremely difficult to reach. The WFP's off-road vehicles are currently still being used conventionally with drivers, for example in South Sudan. Around 7.8 million people there are suffering from acute hunger. In the future, aid transports are to be remote-controlled, without drivers, to protect aid workers from the sometimes life-threatening journeys. Here, the AHEAD team starts its test run for the humanitarian mission.
