Strikingly bright areas in Idaeus Fossae
Subtle colour differences can be detected in the Idaeus Fossae region in images from the HRSC camera system on ESA's Mars Express spacecraft: from south to north, the reddish-brown surface becomes progressively darker, whereas some slightly lower-lying areas are significantly brighter – indicating material with a different mineralogy or varying degrees of weathering. The image width of the perspective view is approximately 70 kilometres in the foreground.
