Level 1

Level 1
At Level 1, train drivers need to pay attention to traditional signals still used along the route. The signal box sends information via the signals – which switch to red or green like a traffic light – about whether or not a train may enter the next section of track. This information is digitally encoded by the LEU (Lineside Electronic Unit) and transmitted to a balise – a kind of beacon. The train's balise reader receives this information as the train passes over the beacon and sends it to both the ETCS onboard unit and the display in the driver's cab. This can warn the driver if the brakes are not applied in time.
