Video: EO Wald – tracking forest damage in Germany
EO Wald is the name given to the DLR information portal that uses satellite data to document the condition of Germany's forests. In recent years, drought, storms and pests have caused huge damage. Based on Sentinel and Landsat data, EO Wald shows losses of canopy cover across Germany for the years 2017 to 2024. As a result, scientists can accurately observe changes in the forest, visualise damage and provide important information for forest management, reforestation and research. In this video, DLR scientist Frank Thonfeld explains how EO Wald works and shows, using damaged areas in the Harz Mountains, why such data is key to better understanding and protecting our forests.
