HYDRA-X is a CS-23 test aircraft developed entirely from scratch, which enables a direct comparison between a hydrogen-powered fuel cell and a turboshaft engine under real flight conditions. Both propulsion architectures use a shared airframe and a ten-propeller DEP system and can be swapped within a single working day using a two-axis rail system on standardised racks. Particularly noteworthy are the large cargo door, the modular system architecture, interchangeable wingtips and a hinged nose section, which will enable future research and sensor technologies. A comprehensive safety concept for LH₂ operation, together with the detailed design of the aerodynamics, structure, mission and propulsion, makes HYDRA-X a versatile platform for the experimental validation of future hydrogen propulsion systems.
