The Mobility in Germany (MiD) study is the most comprehensive nationwide survey on transport use and everyday mobility. Its main objective is to gather representative and reliable information on the socio-demographics of individuals and households and their day-to-day travel behaviour. For example, the survey collects data on the types of transport used, the number of trips made, and the distances travelled.
The MiD provides up-to-date and comprehensive data on key factors that influence mobility and serves as the basis for numerous transport models. As such, the results of the study are a vital source of information for transport planning and research. The data also offers valuable background information and forms an indispensable basis for policymaking in the transport sector.
The MiD is conducted approximately every five years, with previous surveys carried out in 2002, 2008 and 2016–17. In addition to general questions about trips made and transport modes used, each survey includes topics relevant to the particular survey period that may influence mobility. For example, the 2023–24 survey includes questions on the use of remote working, online shopping, e-bike ownership and the Deutschlandticket.
Between April 2023 and May 2024, around 370,000 individuals from 185,000 households were surveyed about their everyday mobility. This yielded detailed data on around one million individual trips, including trip distances and modes of transport used. Respondents reported on all trips made on a specific day. These survey days were spread across the calendar year to account for seasonal and weekly variations in mobility.
The MiD is conducted on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), as well as various federal states, cities and municipalities, and numerous regional transport associations and operators.
