Working together for more climate protection – this is the motto under which the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport, together with stakeholders from industry and research, presented the New Flying Alliance. The aim is to significantly increase the use of climate-friendly aviation fuels beyond mandatory blending quotas.

As a leading research institution, DLR has been intensively involved in the research and development of climate-friendly aviation fuels, also known as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), for many years.

We are working on a large number of projects that investigate technical evaluation and fuel design, i.e. the optimisation of fuel properties, as well as manufacturing methods and application in aircraft. Among other things, we are building the world's largest research facility for the development and testing of the entire PtL production process, the Power-to-Liquid Fuels Technology Platform (TPP). Through scientific research into the application, the DLR can validate and quantify the positive impact of these fuels on the climate and the environment even more accurately.

‘In addition to the open questions in research, there is currently still a lack of pragmatic and permanently reliable regulations, concrete implementation concepts and financial support for this,’ said our institute director Prof. Andreas Huber at the presentation of the alliance.

Through our participation in the alliance, we want to promote technology transfer to industry, exchange knowledge with politicians and society, and support and advance the establishment of sustainable solutions in aviation.
