DLR site Hamburg

DLR and its preceding organisations have been represented in Hamburg since the 1950s. In recent years, its importance as a DLR site has increased significantly. With the establishment of two new institutes in 2017, which make a significant contribution to digitalisation in aviation, there are now six DLR institutes and an innovation centre for quantum computing based in Hamburg, the third-most important location for aviation in the world. The research activities are integrated into the entire DLR network, into national and international research partnerships and into cooperation with industry.

Near Hamburg Airport, DLR conducts selection procedures to recruit suitable personnel in aerospace and shipping. All work is carried out in close cooperation with airlines, air traffic control companies and space agencies. Every year, DLR conducts over 10,000 psychological aptitude tests in Hamburg and at six other test centres in Switzerland, Indonesia, Jordan and Turkey.

At the DLR_School_Lab TU Hamburg, children and young people can actively discover the fascinating world of research and technology. On site, schoolchildren can carry out their own experiments based on current projects in aviation and shipping. DLR supervises bachelor's and master's theses and also offers PhD programmes. At the Finkenwerder site, DLR in Hamburg offers a dual course of study in computer science, majoring in information technology, in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (Präsidium der Dualen Hochschule Baden-Württemberg; DHBW).

Institute of Aerospace Medicine

Within the entire German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Institute of Aerospace Medicine is the only research institute that focuses on life science issues related to transport and aerospace.

Institute of Air Transport

The Institute of Air Transport researches the complex interrelationships of air transport and its subsystems, focusing on scenario development, macroeconomic analysis of the air transport system, business analysis, and modeling and simulation of flight and fleet operations from the perspective of air transport economics.

Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics

The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics in Stuttgart, with further research facilities in Cologne, Ulm, Hamburg and Oldenburg conducts research in the field of efficient energy storage systems that conserve natural resources, and next generation energy conversion technologies.

Aeronautics and seafaring have a lot in common. For both, physical parameters such as buoyancy and flows play a key role, and both are significant branches of industry in Hamburg, where the University of Technology runs a joint schools laboratory with DLR. As such, the DLR_School_Lab TU Hamburg makes air and water transport its two main areas of focus.
