At the Aachen-Merzbrück and Aachen sites, DLR's Small Aircraft Technology research facility is dedicated to research on the topics of electric flight with a focus on small aircraft and future urban aviation.

The DLR Small Aircraft Technology research facility operates the Innovation Centre for Small Aircraft Technologies (Innovationszentrum für Kleinflugzeug-Technologien; INK) in Aachen and at the Aachen Merzbrück Airfield. INK is dedicated to investigating electric flight and urban mobility related to small aircraft, in the context of the Rhenish Mining District's mission to become the ‘mobility region of the future’. The centre addresses scientific questions with a particular focus on general aviation and urban air mobility.

More environmentally friendly technologies must be developed for air transport in order to enable quiet, emission-free flight in the future. These are best achieved through close networking of science and research and increased direct cooperation with small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and industry. INK is intended to provide a suitable platform for this interaction.

In the DLR_School_Lab RWTH Aachen schoolchildren find out how robots 'learn'. They look at how drones and industrial robots are controlled, and learn about current and future issues.
