Encoded in rainbow colours, this aerial view is based on a digital terrain model (DTM) of the region, which permits a deduction of the landscape topography. The reference body for the HRSC-DTM is an equipotential area of Mars known as the Areoid (from Ares, the Ancient Greek god of war). The Areoid functions much like the sea level on Earth: it is a notional expanse of equal gravitational pull in the direction of the planetary centre. The colour code at the top right of the image indicates the elevations. Despite the severe erosion of the crater rim, the colour-coded elevation range of up to 2000 metres indicates the large crater’s impressive depth.
