Hills and small mesas – remnants of the original landscape
Between the trenches and the adjacent lowlands, scattered remnants of a once-continuous rock layer – which has not yet been completely eroded – characterise the landscape. These include the many clearly visible rounded hills (knobs), some with flattened tops, and small mesas.
