Morpheus is a highly innovative hybrid-electric experimental aircraft specifically designed to research morphing wings and hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC). The combination of morphing wings, active boundary-layer control and an aerodynamically undisturbed wing offers particularly high research potential for future energy-efficient electric aircraft. The aircraft is powered by a series hydrogen-electric hybrid system comprising a 250-kilowatt PEM fuel cell and a battery, with liquid hydrogen also used for thermal management. The engine nacelles, positioned on either side of the tail, support focused investigation of the two research questions, while the concept stands out overall for its high level of scientific rigour and the coherent design of the hybrid propulsion system.
