Concentric structures in a crater: evidence of debris-covered glaciers
This view was created from the digital terrain model and the nadir and colour channels of the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) aboard the Mars Express spacecraft. It shows a 15-kilometre-wide crater in Utopia Planitia from a bird’s-eye perspective, covered and surrounded by dark volcanic ash. Inside, it features distinctive concentric patterns, suggesting that rock glaciers crept down the slope and converged in the centre.
