The MMX space probe, still in two parts, in the cleanroom at the JAXA Tanegashima Space Center
The MMX spacecraft is ready to be fitted onto the rocket bound for Mars. In the foreground on the right is the probe's exploration and landing module, which carries the scientific instruments – including telescope cameras, spectrometers and the German-French Idefix® rover – as well as a return module comprising the landing capsule with its thermal shields. In the background on the left is the powerful propulsion module. Once assembled, it will be the largest Japanese interplanetary probe ever built.
