Video: 100% SAF + Turboprop: The first practical test in the air
As part of the CLIM0ART research project, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the aircraft manufacturer Deutsche Aircraft are investigating, for the first time, the emissions from a turboprop aircraft powered entirely by 100 per cent synthetic, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The new DLR research aircraft D328® UpLift is being used as a test platform – accompanied by the DLR Falcon 20E, which measures emissions during a chase flight. The aim is to reduce not only the carbon footprint of aviation but also particulate emissions and climate-warming contrails. This is where the emissions measurements come in, analysing the reduction in soot particles and ice crystals in contrails when synthetic fuels are used.
