Transport research at DLR

At DLR, our transport research develops technological solutions to meet the demands of an increasingly mobile society and economy. Our solutions promote resilient and safe mobility by road, rail and water, significantly reducing transport emissions while strengthening mobility, value creation and employment in Germany. We achieve this by working closely with public stakeholders – such as ministries and local authorities – and companies including vehicle manufacturers and transport operators.

Our transport research strategy and programme

Our goal is to provide policymakers and society with independent, scientifically sound analysis of how transport will change in the future, how these changes can be evaluated and which instruments will achieve the greatest effect – for example, in terms of climate protection.

Research infrastructure

The construction and operation of large-scale research facilities is a statutory task of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The facilities, as well as the research aircraft and helicopters, enable DLR to carry out its research in aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation. The research infrastructure is used across institutes and programmes. National and international partners from research and industry can benefit from DLR's infrastructure and know-how.

Hy­dro­gen – the en­er­gy source of the fu­ture

An economy without greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – this is Europe’s declared, 30-year goal for halting climate change. Renewable energies are expected to replace fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas. Hydrogen will play an important role in the sustainable transformation of the energy supply system.

The future of rail transport

Under its flagship 'Next-Generation Train (NGT)' concept, DLR is developing a vision of future rail transport as an essential part of mobility geared towards sustainability and greater capacity. New technologies from the fields of propulsion systems, aerodynamics, lightweight construction, chassis design, crash behaviour, air conditioning, automation, control and regulation all feed into the NGT concept.

Projects and missions

Galileo

The aim of the civil Galileo system is to make Europe independent of the military-controlled navigation services of the USA (GPS) and Russia (GLONASS) and to provide navigation signals with unprecedented accuracy.

DLR transport research projects

Transport research at the DLR is carried out in theme-centred projects: the relevant DLR institutes research concrete solutions in an interdisciplinary way. All projects benefit from being pooled in the DLR together with its other programs Aeronautics, Space and Energy, as well as networking with politics, the economy and science.
