The Solar Tower Systems Group of DLR’s Institute of Solar Research has been doing extensive research on Central Receivers to develop cost-effective and commercializable technologies. Thanks to its high heat storage capabilities and durability at elevated temperatures, particle based solar receivers draw attention of many research groups. DLR’s Institute of Solar Research has designed, patented and developed the Centrifugal Solar Receiver, which has experimentally proven capability to provide 965 °C of particle outlet temperature with a 2.5MWth-prototype (www.dlr.de/centrec).

The focus of this work is to further develop the available experimental test set-up and to conduct experiments with the particle based centrifugal solar receiver. In the solar receiver, the ceramic particles with various diameters (0.3 – 1 mm), which are accelerated centrifugally and gravitationally, are moving in an inclined rotating drum, and exposed to solar radiation. The main objective of the study is to detect the particle motion by means of a high speed camera set-up in order to validate a DEM-model (discrete particle motion).

Your tasks:

  • Literature review of particle-based solar receiver systems and their experimental test set-ups
  • Generate methods to validate the DEM-model and conceptual design of test set-up
  • Optical design optimization and checking the compatibility of the design to the main system
  • Conducting experiments to show the effect of operational parameters on particle motion

Your qualifications:

  • Studies of mechanical engineering or similar
  • Hands-on experience in basic manufacturing processes like assembling etc. and practical skills for testing
  • Creativity and ability to do brain storming
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good Programming Skills (C++ or Python)
  • Interest in Concentrated Solar Power Systems
  • Good communication skills in English, especially in speaking and writing
