The department of Air Traffic Controller Assistance develops and tests air traffic management (ATM) systems up to fully autonomous ATM systems to support air traffic controllers in the monitoring, planning and guidance of the air traffic for a safe, efficient and climate friendly air transport system. In addition to the classic methodologies the use of AI methods has emerged as a new and important topic in this area. The department is also looking into new interaction modes between humans and machines using for example speech recognition and virtual reality.
The department has 25 employees and is located in Braunschweig, Germany. The intensive cooperation with DLR Institutes at various locations as well as with national and international partners in industry and research like ENRI in Japan and NASA in the USA forms an important cornerstone for the successful scientific work of the department.
As head of the Air Traffic Controller Assistance Department, you will have the following tasks:
  • technical management and disciplinary leadership and organization
  • planning the use of resources for personnel, material and investment expenditure as well as planning the overall budget
  • research management within the scope of the department's technical responsibilities
  • acquisition of research projects and cooperation with other research institutions and industry
  • national and International Collaboration in subject-related committees
  • technical guidance and supervision of doctoral students and visiting scientist

Your qualifications:

  • completed scientific university studies in engineering, aerospace engineering, natural or computer science or similar. (Diploma/Master's degree)
  • completed doctorate as PhD in engineering, aerospace engineering, natural or computer science or similar
  • many years of professional experience in the field of controller assistance
  • sound interdisciplinary knowledge in the fields of systems engineering and systems evaluation
  • ability to provide disciplinary leadership and technical guidance to employees
  • excellent networking skills in the field of air traffic controller assistance
  • experience in the acquisition and administration of third-party funded projects
  • excellent written and spoken English, German is an advantage
  • record of appropriate publications in the context of this application
  • ideally experience in leading and managing projects
  • ability to evaluate scientific contexts (supervision of doctoral students) desired
  • experience in project management welcome
  • experience in leading and managing projects is of advantage
