High-precise Recognition of Physical Objects Based on Image Processing Algorithms for MR Applications

Mixed Reality techniques become more and more popular for the interactive modelling and analysis of space system designs. They are also used in maintenance of airplanes as they allow the immediate interaction with real and virtual components of the system. However, they rely on methods for autonomous detection of physical objects, high-precise registration of virtual objects, as well as tracking of interacting people in such hybrid environments.

Your job would be, therefore, to investigate appropriate methods in computer vision and 3D stereo reconstruction. Thereafter, they have to be integrated into the mentioned applications and to evaluate their efficiency and possibilities of improvements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • evaluation of appropriate SLAM methods for high-precision localization and tracking of static and dynamic objects by means of e.g. AR systems like Microsoft’s HoloLens
  • reconstruction of detected physical objects by semantical identification of point clouds. Such semantical objects can replace those point clouds and are submitted to Digital Twin background systems.
  • evaluation of Mixed Reality environments where multiple users exchange data, modify objects, and provide data to digital twins. Important here is the efficiency of such environments to leverage the cooperative work procedures. Additionally, precise and fast positioning of virtual objects in real working environments should be enabled. This should also work in distributed environments where people are not located at the same place.
  • investigation of methods for predictive object recognition and visualization. This should guarantee real-time behavior of mixed reality applications and offer more intuitive interactions with virtual and physical objects.

Your qualifications:

  • You have an excellent Master or PhD in Computer Science or in a similar research direction.
  • You are an expert in object-oriented software development in C++.
  • You possess a profound knowledge in Image Processing with OpenCV.
  • You have experiences with SLAM technologies (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, SLAM)
  • You are a team player, creative, and able to work independent and self-motivated.
  • You are fluent in spoken and written English (knowledge of German is an asset).
  • Knowledge in game engine programming e.g. Unity with C# could be useful.
  • Experiences in machine learning might be helpful.
  • Practical experiences with programming parallel computer system can support high processing performance.
  • Skills in software development not only on Windows but also Linux help to bring solutions into our large immersive environments.
