Extensional fractures in the western Acheron Fossae
North of the giant Olympus Mons volcano lies an area almost the size of Germany, shaped heavily by tectonic forces and subsequently the deposition of rubble and debris by glaciers: Acheron Fossae – a sequence of almost linear extension faults known in geoscience as a 'horst and graben' structure.
