Navigating difficult terrain: the DLR Scout rover
Scout was developed for exploration and operations in hard-to-reach areas on Earth – for example, during search-and-rescue missions in disaster relief. To this end, the rover has been designed to be especially mobile and robust, enabling it to move across highly uneven terrain while providing the necessary shock absorption. The system is fault-tolerant against motor failures or mechanical malfunctions. It is based on rimless wheels with flexible spokes, as well as flexible 'vertebrae' between its three modules, which house the control hardware, actuators and batteries.
