Our research group "optical transmission systems" develops and optimizes software for communication terminals, systems for conventional optical data transmission, and quantum key distribution as well as error correction schemes methods for optical links between satellites and ground stations on Earth.Together with our industrial partners, we aim to open up new application areas for optical free space transmission systems and to offer the best possible solutions for data transmission in each scenario.
In optical communications, the signal is subject to substantial interferences, which cause deep fades in the received power. Given the very high data rates being transmitted, this means that even a momentary loss of signal can result in a major data loss. We are working intensively on adapting error correction schemes for the optical transmission channel in order to minimize or even prevent such loss of data. This enables, for examples, the error-free transmission of Earth observation data recorded with satellites.
A particular challenge we have successfully met is the development and improvement of coding and decoding schemes for error correction in real time, which play a very significant role for the transmission with very high data rates. Other topics of our group are, for instance, the development of software for Pointing, Acquisition, and Tracking of optical communication terminals.
