ViMiTrans – Innovations and migration methods to transform transport

Transport innovations and migration methods for the transformation of transport
DLR's ViMiTrans project focuses on accelerating the transport transformation process by developing transformation pathways for cities and regions, supporting them in introducing innovative mobility solutions that are widely accepted by society and users.

The research project 'Transport innovations and migration methods for the transformation of transport' (Verkehrsinnovationen und Migrationsmethoden für die Transformation des Verkehrs; ViMiTrans) aims to accelerate the transformation of the German transport sector. Despite the continuing urgency for change, there are obstacles at several levels hindering the implementation of transport innovations.

An important aspect of this transformation is the successful introduction of new technologies and their integration into the strategic transport planning of cities and regions. With the ViMiTrans project, we aim to develop models for this process. It is important that these models are widely accepted by society and users. We draw on existing frameworks, such as the concept of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) – a cornerstone of European urban mobility policy. With the SUMP concept, the European Commission recommends that cities of all sizes develop and implement sustainable mobility plans, which are intended to improve the quality of life for residents throughout entire functional urban areas.

Transformation compass provides practical tools for local authorities

Our goal is to develop transformation pathways for cities and regions based on these models. Measures included in these pathways include the introduction of parking space management, new local public transport services and mobility hubs with sharing services. A 'transformation compass' will also provide local authorities with practical tools, used to select and implement tailored measures for urban or rural areas. They also enable the observation and evaluation of the impact of these measures on mobility and their integration into transformation pathways. Such measures include intermodal services, charging concepts and the use of new vehicle types.

Three central themes at the core of ViMiTrans

In the ViMiTrans project, we are working on three key topics: transformations and transport economic evaluations, strategic planning and monitoring processes, and innovative and integrated vehicle and infrastructure concepts. In the area of transformations and transport economic evaluations, we analyse which factors influence the success of technological, organisational and regulatory innovations in the transport sector. We also identify the most significant obstacles to implementation.

Within the area of strategic planning and monitoring processes, we develop a flexible and adaptable strategic planning process, along with tools within the framework of the transformation compass. This enables the selection of measures and the continuous monitoring and adaptation of their implementation in line with SUMP requirements. This process and related tools are designed to integrate the requirements of various interest groups and define flexible transformation pathways.

In the field of innovative and integrated vehicle and infrastructure concepts, we develop holistic vehicle concepts for all levels of transport. These take into account the requirements of different interest groups and ecological imperatives. To this end, we carry out a detailed analysis of the needs and expectations of the various stakeholders. We also develop tools to evaluate new vehicle concepts and strategies to introduce them to the market.

Practical transfer through collaboration with stakeholders

To test and validate our results in practice, seven DLR institutes and research facilities are working closely with stakeholders from local and regional government, the transport sector and industry in a pilot region. This collaboration ensures that our results are practical and address the actual needs of the various stakeholders.
